L.L. Bean Framingham: From Covered Slab to Polished Concrete

Existing thinset, extensive patching and uneven transitions had led to a planned full-floor overlay. Topcoat prepared and mechanically polished the underlying concrete, delivering the completed floor on schedule while eliminating the planned overlay.

A Slab Hidden Beneath Thinset and Patching

The existing floor presented thinset, extensive patching and uneven transitions. Before the concrete could become the finished surface, those conditions needed to be addressed.

A full-floor overlay had been planned. Topcoat’s work focused on preparing the existing slab and developing it into a mechanically polished floor.

The Work Beneath the Finished Floor

Topcoat removed the existing materials, addressed uneven transitions and prepared the concrete for mechanical polishing. The preparation established the starting point for the finished surface.

Our own crews and equipment carried the preparation and polishing through as one coordinated scope. Each stage supported the next, from material removal and repairs to surface refinement.

Developing the Concrete as the Finished Surface

Following preparation, Topcoat mechanically refined the concrete through the project’s grinding, grouting, densification and polishing sequence. The resulting floor revealed the character of the existing concrete rather than covering it with the planned overlay.

A Completed Polished Floor Without the Planned Overlay

Topcoat completed the 18,000-square-foot project on schedule. Preparation and mechanical polishing made it possible to use the underlying concrete as the finished floor, eliminating the planned full-floor overlay.
